VolunteerTibet
is a volunteer service that is dedicated to serving the needs of the Tibetan
community of Dharamsala, India. We started with a simple goal - “To help Tibetan organizations connect with volunteers and to foster a meaningful cultural exchange. To empower these organizations while helping potential volunteers find ways to give of themselves.” VolunteerTibet officially launched on December 10th, 2002, commemorating the day His Holiness
the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize.
Created by Volunteers for Volunteers
Initially conceived in November of 2001, VolunteerTibet.org
was created over the course of several months by
a talented team of volunteers from Spain, Australia, America, and India. The
site came to life with the generaous help from numerous
people within the Tibetan government, NGO's, and the local
community. Thukje Chey!!! (Thank You!!!)
Based Within the Community
While VolunteerTibet is run with the help of volunteers from all over the world, our only full-time employee is a member of the Tibetan community who oversees our volunteer program on location in India. This means that your volunteer placement is arranged by a local expert, someone who is sensitive to the needs of the community from within. This also means that by supporting us, you are directly funding the livelihood of a Tibetan community member.
Volunteers
The VolunteerTibet website is intended to help interested volunteers browse and identify the volunteer opportunities that they are most interested in. We offer many other services to assist you in your travel to Dharamsala and to orient you to the community and culture when you arrive. Please ask us for more information about our Reception and Orientation services.
Organizations
VolunteerTibet was created to help organizations
find qualified volunteers quickly and efficiently. The
service is free to use and is intended for non-profit and
government Tibetan organizations in India. Please contact us if you would like to register your organization with us.
All information submitted to the VolunteerTibet
website by organizations or volunteers will be kept
strictly confidential, and will not be used for any other
purposes.
If you have any suggestions, questions, comments,
complaints, or compliments, please send us some
feedback.
Many thanks to Dolma Guest House, Hayer Cybercafe, and Laptop Notebook World,
all in Delhi, India, for their invaluable support in the Coding Crunch. Their
help was above and beyond the call of business, and the programming behind
this site wouldn't have happened without them.
The version of the Volunteer Tibet site referred to above,
was reconstructed in 2004 by Frank
B. Brokken, University of Groningen, the Netherlands, just before and
during his 2004 sabbatical leave.
